Diagnostic Overview
MaxxForce fault code SPN 2659 FMI 21 is commonly associated with low EGR flow or EGR flow performance. The ECM may command EGR flow but not see the expected response in pressure, temperature, or airflow. On MaxxForce engines, EGR restriction and carbon buildup are common contributors to poor flow and repeated derate complaints. Diagnosis should include both the EGR hardware and the sensors used to calculate flow.
Likely Causes
Plugged EGR cooler, carbon-packed EGR passages, sticking EGR valve, failed EGR actuator, exhaust restriction, intake leak, faulty differential pressure sensor, plugged sensor tubes, or turbo/air-handling problem.
What To Check First
Inspect EGR valve movement, check EGR cooler restriction, clean or inspect pressure tubes and ports, compare commanded versus actual EGR data, and check related boost or exhaust pressure codes.
