ECM Performance started in 2010 as the diesel industry shifted into modern aftertreatment. 15 years later, we're a specialized diesel ECM programming shop based in Fort Lauderdale, FL — serving owner-operators, fleets, municipal operations, and export markets across 38+ countries.
Why ECM Programming, Specifically
The decision to specialize in ECM programming — rather than general diesel repair — came from watching how badly modern aftertreatment was fitting actual fleet operational reality. EPA 2010 brought DPF systems to every Class 8 truck, and operators immediately ran into duty-cycle conflicts: short-haul urban delivery trucks, snow plow operations, refuse fleets, school buses, and oilfield trucks were all running calibration profiles designed around long-haul highway duty cycles that didn't match their actual operation.
The fault codes, derate events, DPF regeneration failures, and DEF-system issues that followed weren't random — they reflected a calibration-vs-operation mismatch. Hardware service alone couldn't solve a calibration problem. We saw a clear path: focus exclusively on the calibration side of the operational equation, build the platform-specific expertise to handle it properly, and stay out of the hardware work that needed diesel mechanics with the right tooling and bay space.
Fifteen years later, that focus has held. We don't work on the truck hardware itself. EGR coolers, DPF substrates, turbochargers, injectors — those need physical service from a diesel mechanic. Our work is calibration, diagnostic, and programming. The narrow scope is the reason we're good at it.
How The Service Model Evolved
Early on, the service model was ship-in only. Operators pulled the ECM, shipped it to Fort Lauderdale, we programmed it, shipped it back. Worked then; still works now for many customer situations. It's the most platform-agnostic method — we can handle every ECM we support through ship-in regardless of manufacturer tooling support for remote work.
Around 2015–2018, manufacturer tooling matured to support remote calibration loading on more platforms. We built the diagnostic-and-programming workflow to deliver remote service: schedule a session, the operator connects through their existing diagnostic interface, we load the calibration without the ECM ever leaving the truck. Same-day turnaround on supported platforms. That cut customer downtime substantially.
On-site service came later as fleet customers started asking for multi-truck programming where the operational complexity of shipping each ECM individually didn't make sense. For South Florida fleets we can typically be on-site within a day or two. For larger fleet projects nationwide, we travel. On-site is the right choice for coordinated fleet work where the logistical overhead of shipping outweighs the travel cost.
Today the three methods — ship-in, remote, and on-site — cover essentially every operational situation a customer brings us. The right method for a given job depends on the platform, the location, and the operational timing.
Geographic Reach
The shop is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. From there we serve South Florida fleets directly with on-site programming, North American customers through ship-in or remote service, and worldwide export markets through ECM shipment plus remote support during installation at the destination.
Export work has grown into a significant portion of the business. Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific — different fuel quality standards, different emissions regulatory environments, different operational realities all matter for export calibration. Over 15 years we've been part of export programs across 38+ countries. The North American truck market increasingly serves global resale and the calibration alignment for the destination market is part of what makes the resale work.
Milestones
Founded in Fort Lauderdale
Started the same year EPA 2010 emissions regulations took effect, bringing DPF, SCR, and DEF systems to every Class 8 truck. The new aftertreatment complexity created an immediate operational reality for fleet operators that calibration work could address.
Platform expansion
Initially Cummins and Detroit-focused. Added Paccar MX-13, Caterpillar truck and industrial platforms, MaxxForce, Mack, and Volvo over the following years as fleet customers requested support across mixed-platform operations.
Remote programming added
As manufacturer tooling evolved to support remote calibration loading, we built the workflow to deliver same-day programming without the ECM ever leaving the truck. Cut customer downtime substantially on supported platforms.
Worldwide export expansion
Export market for North American diesel trucks accelerated. We expanded the calibration library and shipping workflow to handle ECM-only ship-in service from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
Fleet on-site service
On-site programming for South Florida fleets, plus larger fleet projects nationwide where shipping logistics get complicated. Today the three service methods — ship-in, remote, and on-site — cover the operational realities of every customer category we serve.
Where We Are Today
10,000+ ECMs programmed. 38+ countries served. Ship-in turnaround of 2-3 day. Same-day quotes. A small specialized team that knows the platforms we work on at the calibration-library level.
The customer base today divides into recognizable categories: owner-operators dealing with recurring fault codes and derate events; fleet operators managing fleet-wide patterns; municipal and government fleets running operational duty cycles that fight aftertreatment engineering assumptions; off-road and export operators where DPF and SCR compliance isn't the operational reality; and independent dealers and shops needing specialized ECM work their own tooling doesn't cover.
The thread running through all of them is the same: standard service paths haven't resolved the operational reality, and a calibration-focused conversation moves the situation forward.
What's Next
We're continuing to expand platform coverage as new diesel ECM platforms come into service, particularly on the Caterpillar industrial side and newer Cummins X-series variants. We're also building out content and diagnostic resources that help operators recognize the calibration-vs-operation mismatch patterns earlier, before the third or fourth dealer visit happens.
