P0404

Exhaust gas recirculation valve, cooler, and flow faults.

System
MaxxForce EGR

Diagnostic Overview

MaxxForce fault code P0404 generally indicates EGR valve range or performance. The ECM is seeing that the EGR valve position or response is not within the expected range. This can happen when the valve sticks, the actuator is weak, the position feedback is inaccurate, or carbon buildup prevents smooth movement. Symptoms may include rough running, smoke, poor acceleration, and derate.

Likely Causes

Sticking EGR valve, carbon buildup, failed EGR actuator, position sensor fault, wiring issue, connector problem, restricted EGR cooler, or calibration/relearn issue.

What To Check First

Run an EGR actuator test, compare commanded and actual EGR position, inspect the valve for carbon binding, check wiring and connectors, and perform relearn/calibration if required.
