P0401

Exhaust gas recirculation valve, cooler, and flow faults.

System
MaxxForce EGR

Diagnostic Overview

MaxxForce fault code P0401 generally means insufficient EGR flow. The ECM is commanding exhaust gas recirculation but does not see enough flow based on sensor feedback. This can cause high combustion temperatures, NOx-related faults, poor performance, and possible derate. The fault is often caused by restriction or sensor error rather than the ECM itself.

Likely Causes

Plugged EGR cooler, clogged EGR passages, sticking or failed EGR valve, failed EGR differential pressure sensor, plugged sensor tubes, intake leak, exhaust leak, or turbo/boost issue.

What To Check First

Check EGR valve operation, inspect the cooler and passages for restriction, clean pressure tubes and ports, compare EGR sensor data, and inspect intake and exhaust plumbing.
