Diagnostic Overview
Cummins fault code 4956 generally points to VGT actuator control or turbocharger position performance. The ECM may detect that the turbocharger cannot control boost or exhaust pressure accurately. Common causes include actuator failure, actuator calibration failure, sticking vanes, soot buildup, boost leaks, exhaust leaks, faulty pressure sensors, or wiring faults. Diagnosis should include comparing commanded versus actual actuator position, pressure-testing the charge-air system, inspecting exhaust leaks, and verifying actuator calibration.
