SPN 103 FMI 18

Turbocharger boost control and air-handling faults.

System
MaxxForce Turbo

Diagnostic Overview

MaxxForce fault code SPN 103 FMI 18 generally means the turbocharger speed signal is valid but below the expected range at a moderately severe level. The engine may not be producing enough turbo speed or boost for the commanded operating condition. This can cause low power, poor acceleration, smoke, and derate. The problem may be mechanical, sensor-related, or caused by a leak in the intake or exhaust system.

Likely Causes

Boost leak, charge-air cooler leak, exhaust leak before turbo, sticking turbo mechanism, failed turbo actuator, restricted intake, faulty turbo speed sensor, low exhaust energy, EGR issue, or fuel system problem.

What To Check First

Pressure-test the charge-air system, inspect exhaust manifold and turbo inlet for leaks, compare commanded boost to actual boost, check turbo speed sensor data, and inspect turbo actuator movement.
