Diagnostic Overview
MaxxForce fault code SPN 3251 is commonly associated with diesel particulate filter differential pressure. The ECM uses the DPF differential pressure signal to estimate restriction across the DPF and to help determine regeneration needs. When the signal is above, below, or outside the desired range, the truck may experience frequent regens, warning lights, black smoke, or inability to complete regeneration. This code should not automatically mean the DPF is bad; sensor tubes, hoses, wiring, and sensor readings should be checked first.
Likely Causes
Plugged, kinked, cracked, or leaking DPF differential pressure tubes; failed DPF differential pressure sensor; wiring or connector issue; soot-loaded DPF; ash-loaded DPF; exhaust leaks; or excessive soot from an upstream engine issue.
What To Check First
Inspect DPF differential pressure tubes and hoses for plugging, kinks, cracks, or moisture, compare live DPF pressure data, review regeneration history, and check for excessive smoke or related aftertreatment codes.
