Diagnostic Overview
Cummins fault code 646 commonly relates to turbocharger control, boost pressure, or air-handling performance. The ECM may detect that actual boost does not match commanded boost or that turbo response is outside the expected range. Causes include a sticking VGT mechanism, failed turbo actuator, boost leak, charge-air cooler leak, exhaust leak before the turbo, restricted air filter, faulty intake pressure sensor, or turbo mechanical wear. Diagnosis should include commanded versus actual boost, actuator response, intake pressure testing, and exhaust leak inspection.
